Privacy Policy

Gist — AI Summarizer ("the extension") is a browser extension that summarizes web pages using AI, and can translate the resulting summary. This policy explains exactly what the extension does and does not do with your data.

No server, no data collection

The developer operates no server and collects no personal data. The extension has no analytics, no tracking, and no advertising. We never see your API key, your settings, the pages you visit, or the text you summarize or translate.

Your API key and settings

The extension uses your own OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini API key. Your API key and preferences (provider and model) are stored only in your browser via chrome.storage and are never transmitted to the developer. They remain on your device(s) and can be removed at any time by clearing the extension's settings or uninstalling it.

What happens to page text

When — and only when — you click "Summarize" (or choose "Summarize with Gist" from the right-click menu), the extension reads the text of the current page or your selected text and sends it directly from your browser to the AI provider you chose (OpenAI, Anthropic, or Google Gemini), authenticated with your own API key, to generate the summary. If you then choose to translate that summary, the summary text is sent to the same provider in the same way.

That text is processed by the AI provider under their privacy policy and terms:

• Anthropic Privacy Policy
• Google Privacy Policy

The extension only contacts api.openai.com, api.anthropic.com, and generativelanguage.googleapis.com. It contacts no other servers.

Permissions

• activeTab / scripting — read the current tab's text only at the moment you click, to summarize or translate it.
• storage — save your API key and settings in your browser.
• contextMenus — provide the right-click "Summarize / Translate selection" items.
• host access to api.openai.com, api.anthropic.com, and generativelanguage.googleapis.com — send your text to the AI provider using your key.

Data sharing

We do not sell, rent, or share any user data with anyone. The only transmission of your text is the request you trigger, sent directly from your browser to your chosen AI provider.
